Playworks and Musicalworks deadlines extended

January 14,2014

Procrastinating playwrights, composers, and lyricists, rejoice: you have an extra week to submit your masterpieces to Thespian Playworks and Musicalworks. Entries must now be postmarked, in the case of Playworks, or emailed in the case of Musicalworks, no later than Friday, January 24, for consideration in the Educational Theatre Association/International Thespian Society’s premier programs for aspiring writers. Both contests are for current high school Thespians who, if selected, are able attend the 2014 Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska, to workshop their pieces alongside professional mentors—that’s the prize for winning. Before sending in their pieces, students should carefully review the submission guidelines for each program. (They’re quite different: Playworks here; Musicalworks here).

The original Playworks/Musicalworks deadline of January 15 was two weeks earlier than submission dates in previous years—a move meant to allow for more judging and planning time, organizers said, but this change, combined with the extended holiday break brought by severe weather in many parts of the country earlier this month, seemed to be having a negative effect on the number of scripts and shows submitted.

“We know there are a lot of talented students out there writing plays and musicals, and we want to give them every chance to share their work with us—these opportunities are too great for anyone to miss out because of bad timing,” said Playworks coordinator Julie York Coppens. “I hope teachers will urge their students to take advantage of this extra time and submit, so we can keep bringing the best student writing to life.”

Thespian Playworks, now in its twenty-first year, is operated by the staff of Dramatics magazine and sponsored by Samuel French, Inc. Musicalworks, a newer program designed to promote original musical writing by high school students, is sponsored by Theatrical Rights Worldwide.
