EdTA will offer online standards training in 2015

January 7, 2015

The Educational Theatre Association will offer a two-part professional development webinar for teachers, Unpacking the National Core Arts Standards, January 24 and 31 and February 14 and 21. The registration fee is $50. Each two-part workshop is available to the first twenty-five registrants. Eight CEUs will be available through the University of Northern Colorado.

The webinars, a repeat of a popular presentation offered last October, will run on successive Saturdays at 3 p.m. EST, and be facilitated by Dr. Mary Schuttler, head of theatre education at the University of Northern Colorado, and co-chair of the National Core Theatre Standards writing team, and James Palmarini, EdTA director of educational policy, and a member of the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards leadership team.

Each webinar session runs for two hours. Registrants will receive a “digital workbook” of materials in advance to help them prepare and participate. Both sessions will include Q&A opportunities in which participants can interact directly with the presenters.

In the first Saturday meeting, attendees will learn how the Core Theatre Standards’ Model Cornerstone Assessments (MCAs) can help them identify the most important things that their students should know and be able to do at the conclusion of their theatre education. Session one will conclude with guidance on a homework assignment: the creation of a basic or advanced standards-based MCA using participants’ own curricula. The facilitators will offer “office hours” during the following week in which they will be available for online or phone consultation with participants as they work through their homework assignments.

In the second Saturday meeting, the presenters and registrants will “unpack” the assessments that the teachers have created during the intervening week, consider their alignment with the Core Standards, and do a crosswalk to individual state standards and curricula and how these can be applied in theatre classrooms, on stages, and in curriculum planning.
