If you’re an aspiring playwright, lyricist, or composer who thrives on impossible deadlines, you’re in luck: the submission deadlines for Thespian Playworks and Thespian Musicalworks are mere days away. Time to polish that masterpiece and send it in.
Both contests are for current high school Thespians who, if selected, are available to attend the 2014 Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska, in June, to workshop their pieces—that’s the prize for winning. Please refer to the submission guidelines for each program (they’re quite different, and can be found on Scholtheatre.org) before sending your script or musical excerpt, and do it quickly. Entries must be postmarked in the case of Playworks, or emailed in the case of Musicalworks, by January 15.
Thespian Playworks, now in its twenty-first year, is operated by Dramatics magazine and the International Thespian Society and is sponsored by Samuel French, Inc. Musicalworks, a newer program designed to promote original musical writing by high school students, is operated by the Educational Theatre Association and sponsored by Theatrical Rights Worldwide.
Guidelines for both Playworks and Musicalworks can be found in the Thespian Festival library
