Next Generation Works is a suite of programs designed to promote original writing by and for high school student members of the International Thespian Society. The programs — Thespian Playworks, Thespian Musicalworks, Thespian Filmworks, and Thespian Criticworks — allow students to collaborate with theatre professionals to create, present, and respond to new productions. Many participants have gone on to careers in theatre, writing, and related fields.
Finalists are invited to attend the International Thespian Festival, where student writers join with professional directors, dramaturgs, musical directors, and volunteer actors to present their short works before a live audience. In addition, one world premiere play and one musical are commissioned from professional artists and presented each year in staged readings.
The Next Generation Works program honors student achievement by:
- Encouraging and celebrating the finest and most diverse student writing
- Providing opportunities for students to develop professional skills
- Encouraging schools to produce new student works
