Elizabeth Hansen received her B.A. Degree in Speech and Theater: Certification in Secondary Education from Iowa State University and a Master of Arts in Education Degree from Viterbo University. In June 2017, Liz retired from teaching English and Speech at Grinnell High School after 31 years that included directing plays, musicals and speech events. During her career, she served on multiple committees for the Iowa High School Speech Association including twelve years on the Executive Committee as the coach-at-large. She was inducted into the Iowa High School Speech Association’s Hall of Fame in the fall of 2016, the Iowa Thespian Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Educational Theatre Association’s national Hall of Fame in 2010. Liz received the Marcella E. Oberle Award for Outstanding K-12 Teaching from the National Communication Association in November 2010. Currently, Liz is on the Grinnell College staff serving as the Program Assistant for the Grinnell AmeriCorps Partnership.
In 2015, Liz stepped away from the director’s chair, after directing high school plays and musicals for over 28 years, including the 2009 Iowa Thespian All State show, The Laramie Project.
