1.  Beginning level curriculum

Posted Jul 10, 2014 11:47 AM
Hello all,
This is my first day with access to the forum. I will take on teaching my high school's two theatre classes this fall in addition to directing two plays a year. First class is freshman. Other class is a mix of upperclassmen. Not much help coming from my predecessor. I'm looking for curriculum help. Is there a collection of lesson plans and activities already on the ETA site somewhere? Or can anyone share anything at all in terms of your syllabus, lesson plans, etc? Any particular books you would recommend for building/jumpstarting a theatre program?

I appreciate any help or suggestions you can offer.

Welcome Brian! I recommend two books by Joe Deer- Acting in Musical Theatre and Directing Musical Theatre- I just bought both and am delighted to see how both books are filled with handouts, plans, practical details and inspiration. I may have paraphrased the titles a bit but you can easily find them under his name. Their use is not limited to folks in musical theatre. I learned about both right here in the forum when I asked about ideas to re-inspire me. They will be very useful as I plan my acting classes. Articles in Dramatics and Teaching Theatre magazine have been very useful to me as well. ------------------------------------------- Jan Jensen Tucker GA -------------------------------------------

I am heading to London tomorrow for the month. If you shoot an email to me in August I'd be happy to share some of my lesson plans. :)

One thing I always do with my beginning kids is a great deal of improv. They find it lots of fun and it gets them up performing in front of each other in a very relaxed manner. If you don't have a lot of improv experience I can give you some really simple games that will get you going. Just add that in on the email.
