I'm doing Poe short stories with my Middle Schoolers. Anyone have any ideas to make it super spooky and a bit more fun?

Playscripts has several shows that are based in Poe. I'd look at either An Evening With Edgar Allen Poe or A Nightfall With Edgar Allen Poe.

It's a great time to talk costuming and make up design with the students.  I think you can do a lot with both of those to help make something spooky, but not corny scary.  Lighting options can really help create the mood.  Consider the difference between a spotlight casting a small area of light on stage versus a lamp on stage to create a small pool of light.  Finally, nothing can create suspense better than well-crafted pacing of the lines.  Poe especially likes repetition and this can be played with to really increase the suspense.  I would challenge them to consider all the nonverbal communication that can add to the lines and setting as well.
