For the first time in many years we need to hire a music director for our musical.  Does anyone have an idea as to what the going rate is to hire a musical director for one show?

That really depends on your community and general costs in your area. If you don't get an answer from another local school I'd check with your local theatres to see what the going rate is in your area. You might also be able to get a cost break if you go through a local community college that is looking to introduce themselves to more potential students.

I pay my piano player $100/day the last 2 weeks for up to 5 hrs./ night. Even if she can only be there 1 hr. The rate is the same. I knock off $100 from the total so we get 1 day free & then I give all the pit a $75 gift card & include her & I give her $100 to take the pit out for drinks/ appetizers on closing night & she & any girl pit members get flowers on closing night. Pit gets a case of water & free snacks, we feed them pizza one day & coffee most days. I also give them cast shirts that say their instrument on back to wear on Show Nights. My volunteer Music Director comes 2x before Show Nights and I give a shirt & a $75 gift card. Years ago I paid the Music Director $100/night & only paid the piano $400.l total. Each year I try to get him back for $150/night but he is in such high demand that I haven’t had him in 4 years & choose shows with easier music because of that.
