Telephones for Bye Bye Birdie

We need lots of telephones for our upcoming production of Bye Bye Birdie.  Does anyone have a whole bunch they can loan or sell or rent to us?  Really we are mostly in need of the receivers only, so we'd have to disconnect the receiver from the phone for the production OR we are happy to accept receivers only! Prefer lots of colors but will take anything at this point!

    Many thanks!

I had difficulty with this issue when we did this show as well, so what I did was use large cardboard cutouts of receivers and painted them in bright colors!  It was kind of a comic book effect, but looked pretty cool!  Just thought I'd pass this on!

    Hello,
I have six telephones of assorted colors that you may borrow for reimbursement of postage.  I can mail them on Saturday.  Five are rotary, one is push button.  If you want just the receivers, that would be cheaper as these are old and heavy!  Let me know.  They would be coming from Maryland.

I did the show a few years ago and used plastic beer cups which were painted different colors with cords varying in length from 6 feet to many more feet for the actors to use in the telephone scene.  The cords wound around each other and it worked wonderfully.

When we did it years ago we had a huge number of girls for that song and one clever mom went to a Home Depot and in the plumbing department found plastic pipe elbows.  They fit in their hands, they are curved like a receiver, and we painted them all funky colors.  Can't remember if we put cords on them or not.

It may just be in my area, but the local thrift stores always seem to have quite a few telephones. Most thrift stores offer deals on certain days of the week for half priced items. The only draw back may be finding phones that have the correct look to fit the time period of the show. Might be worth a look, though! .

Hello - If you have not yet found phones for BYE BYE BIRDIE, I may have your solution. I am at a private school just an hour outside of NYC and we did the show last year.  I purchased  mine from an electronics store.  They are actually meant to plug into cell phones in place of speakers or ear buds, but they look like old fashioned handsets.  We have about 30 of them and they are bright pink, lime green, sky blue, vivid orange, etc. Our kids tucked the plug end of the cord into belts and waistbands and they could move and dance without having to ever put the phones down.  It looked great.  We rented them this year to a high school down the street from us and they just returned them this morning - which made me recall your post.  So, if you are still looking, let me know and maybe we can figure something out.

For anyone finding this post, we no longer have the phone handsets as part of our stock at Morristown-Beard School.  After renting them out several times in the years since our production of BYE BYE BIRDIE, we gave them to an inner-city school that did not have the resources to rent them.  It helped that school and also opened up some space in our very small storage closet.  However, you may be able to find similar products on eBay by searching Apple Classic Retro Handset and they have come down in price quite a bit since we bought them.  Best of luck.
