2018 Melba Day Henning Theatre Education Scholarship Awarded to Allyson Butler

Allyson-Butler-Head-ShotThe Educational Theatre Association annually awards this scholarship for $1,000 a year, renewable for up to $4,000, to a graduating senior working toward a career in theatre education. This year’s recipient is Allyson Butler, Troupe 5022, Mehlville High School in St. Louis, Missouri.

Butler was inducted into the International Thespian Society at the end of her freshman year and went on to take part in 12 productions at her high school and five other productions around the St. Louis area. She traveled Washington, D.C. in March 2018 as part of the Missouri delegation to Arts Advocacy Day in support of the National Endowment of the Arts and arts education. Butler graduated in May, and plans to attend Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to start her BSEd in Theatre Education. She also intends to get her middle school and English endorsements.

This scholarship is funded by a bequest from veteran theatre educator Melba Day Henning.

2018 Amy Bennett Musical Theatre Scholarship Awarded to Mitchell Lewis

Mitchell-Lewis-Head-ShotThe Educational Theatre Association annually awards this scholarship to a graduating senior entering a college program to major in musical theatre. This year’s recipient is Mitchell Lewis, Troupe 1794, Floyd Central High School, in Floyds Knobs, Indiana.

Lewis was inducted into the International Thespian Society in 2015 and has been an elected member of the Floyd Central Thespian Board through 2018. He has performed in 13 productions at his high school as well as four professional productions in the region. He recently had the opportunity to perform the lead role of Jack Kelly in Troupe 1794’s production of Disney’s Newsies on the International Thespian Festival main stage. Lewis plans to attend Wright State University this fall, pursuing a BFA in musical theatre.

This scholarship is funded by the Amy Bennett Foundation, established in her memory by her family.
