Here’s what happened at the Educational Theatre Association Board of Directors meeting, July 22-23 during the annual EdTA Leadership Summit in Atlanta. The board:

  • Received a budget update from Director of Finance Doug Sandor, who said the Association is on track to show a $300,000 surplus at the end of the year.
  • Welcomed new Deputy Executive Director Douglas Berlon, who will have responsibility for overseeing the areas of education, events, publications, marketing, and advocacy.
  • Appointed a task force (Debbie Corbin, Matt Conover, Gai Jones, and Krista Carson Elhai, chaired by then-President-elect Frank Pruet) to work on the creation of a “leadership academy” that would identify and train future EdTA leaders.
  • Appointed a second task force (Corbin, Conover, Jones, Lynn Jensen, and Pruet) to explore whether changes should be made in the board’s term limits policy and in the way the board leadership is selected.
  • Heard reports from Director of Educational Policy Jim Palmarini on the JumpStart Theatre initiative for middle schools, the National Core Arts Standards, the Model Cornerstone Assessment project, and revisions to EdTA’s Individual Events program materials.
  • Absorbed a presentation from insurance broker Michelle Evans of Aon on options for purchasing insurance coverage for state and national events. Executive Director Julie Cohen Theobald said the states will be required to carry general liability and directors and officers insurance. The national office recommends that chapters also purchase other coverages, such as accident and medical and event cancellation. All policies will be negotiated and coordinated by the national office on behalf of the state chapters, saving them time and money.
  • Heard a report from Theobald on plans to partner with the American Alliance for Theatre and Education on the Theatre in Our Schools public awareness campaign.
  • After listening to a presentation by Director of Development Marion Combs, approved a motion to proceed with the necessary legal steps to reactivate the Educational Theatre Association Foundation as a fundraising vehicle for the organization.
  • Discussed strategic planning initiatives with the executive director. Among the strategic focal points during 2016 will be new registration software for events, the EdTA Foundation, alumni programs, Theatre in Our Schools, and JumpStart Theatre.

Also during the Leadership Summit: Martha Loudon, West Virginia chapter director, and Jeff Hall, Oregon chapter director, were selected by their peers for the two chapter director seats on the EdTA Nominating Committee.
