Board election ballot is finalized

July 29, 2015

The slate of five candidates for two seats on the Educational Theatre Association’s Board of Directors has been finalized after expiration of the filing period for ballot petitions. No petitions were filed.

Two members will be selected for three-year terms on the Board of Directors beginning August 1, 2016.

The candidates are:

Matt Conover, Ladera Ranch, California, vice president for creative entertainment at Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. He has served as an appointed member of the EdTA board since 2008 and as board treasurer for the past five years. He is a member of the foundation board for the Orange County (California) School of the Arts.

Brian Curl, New York City, an actor, singer, and dancer. He has served as director and choreographer for the Thespian Musicalworks program, presented workshops at the Thespian Festival and served as EdTA national office representative for state festivals. He has worked as an artist in residence at high schools in Arkansas and Mississippi.

Steven Fleming, Columbia, Maryland, lead technical theatre teacher for the Howard County Public School System; teaches theatre arts, musical theatre, and stagecraft at Oakland Mills High School. He also participates in curriculum writing and has led workshops to revise the theatre curriculum. He has served on the board of directors of the Howard County Summer Theatre since 2008.

John (Jerf) Friedenberg, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, director of theatre at Wake Forest University since 1999; former managing director of Three Rivers Shakespeare at the University of Pittsburgh. He serves on the board of the North Carolina Thespians and has been a workshop presenter and adjudicator at the Thespian Festival and various state festivals.

Phillip Goodchild, Ruskin, Florida, Thespian troupe director, drama sponsor, and assistant head of the English Department at Lennard High School. He is a national board certified teacher in English language arts for adolescents and young adults and serves as teacher training consultant, facilitator, and board member of the Tampa Bay Area Writing Project at the University of South Florida.

Candidate responses to the vita questionnaire can be found in the 2015 elections library.

There will also be a revision to the EdTA Code of Regulations on the ballot. Essentially a housekeeping measure, the change will eliminate duplication and inconsistencies between the Code and parts of EdTA’s Chapter Governance Policy dealing with the selection of chapter directors. The current procedures for filling chapter director offices will not change. A summary of the proposed code revision can be found in the 2015 elections library.

Electronic voting will begin in early September, and members will be able to vote by paper ballot during the membership meeting at the EdTA National Conference in St. Pete Beach, Florida, October 1-4.
