There is a value to letting your patrons and students know that theatre has been a part of your school's history, often for longer than most other programs. Think "class play." Devote some space in your program to a list of productions. If you do not already have that list, It is a great research project for your Thespians or perhaps your school's publication staff. The old yearbooks are a good source. Showing that theatre has been a part of your school's culture for a long time can contribute to sustaining it.

Thank you Lana!  I have a list from my tenure and have often thought about doing it for the history of our school.  Thanks for the prompting to get it done and to go the extra step and put it in the program is great PR.

Do you guys keep all of your records in a binder? Is it student run or teacher run? I think this would greatly benefit our troupe to keep more and more information on paper! Do you use it when you advertise? 

I know some people try to keep track of GPAs that the theatre students make and scores for advocacy purposes, do you guys do this?

Our school has a display in the lobby with pictures, programs, and lists of shows from the last 50 years.  It was done by a senior for her Senior Seminar project a few years ago. There are always a few people looking at it before shows and during intermission.

I agree, a little PR can help your program.  I've begun taking one photo from each show since the school opened in 1972. The  plan is having them displayed along the theatre lobby as a history of the program.  I've only been here two years so it's a big project but also very interesting to see what was done in the past.

History-oh so crucial. 

A couple of things I do:

We have a great Elementary program, so I track both ES/MS and HS on a spread sheet. At Senior Night (closing night of Spring show), I read off the list of productions that that year's graduating class might have been involved in (4th thru 12th grade)

Since I took the position, I've been framing a cast/crew photo from every mainstage production, and hanging it in the drama room. Okay, that's only 4 photos so far (2 years), but it's already looking impressive. I also put an adhesive pocket on the back of each frame and put a program and ticket in it.

Next step: There is a stack of old show posters in my room. This summer-I plan on coordinating them against yearbooks to complete the timeline.

As far as GPA? Darn right. The admin is always well aware of my Troupe GPA, how many 4.0s in the troupe, and what percentage of academic award recipients are theatre participants. And I don't care if they only did one show. Once you work a show, you're part of the family! As such, back to Senior Night: I will recognize a senior from the stage, even if they haven't set foot near it since 9th grade.

What great ideas!  Thank you all! 
Owensboro High School was the first school in Kentucky to have a theatre program.  The Rose Curtain Players began 90 years ago, but we don't have a great deal of information.  I think that researching and finding information would be a great project for some of my students!  GPA's - what a great idea!!!
